In Slavonski Brod, there is a street like no other in any Croatian city. Splavarska Street is not made up of houses, but of about a hundred houseboats, each with its own house number.
On the banks of the Sava River in Slavonski Brod lies a unique Croatian street. Splavarska Street is not paved with asphalt nor lined with sidewalks-it consists of about a hundred houseboats lined up along the river, each with its own address and house number. Such a sight cannot be seen in any other city in the country.
The street stretches from the Vijuš Sports Hall all the way to the Poloj Sports and Recreation Center. Its residents do not only stay on the water during the summer months-many of them live there year-round. Life by the Sava is not a passing pastime for them, but a special way of life.
Their days are spent socializing, fishing, and enjoying homemade food, and the scenes they see every day, as they themselves point out, they would not trade for any sea. The photographs captured by Ivica Galović bear witness to this distinctive community that has found its home on the water.
